Xiaomi 1S Electric Scooter Review
Promoted at Xiaomi’s launch event with the strapline ‘ride the last mile’, the 1S is aimed at commuters and short trips; however, it’s capable of a lot more than that.
Compared to existing models, the 1S is an improvement with enhanced features over the M365.
Performance and power
The Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter 1S has solid power and performance for a mid-range electric scooter – speed, motor and range – for everyday use in the UK. And it boasts a more efficient next-generation battery that will last longer.
Maximum speed
A maximum speed of 25km/h (15.5mph) is plenty fast enough considering the speed restrictions and laws for the UK and most of Europe. For the rental e-scooter trial, the maximum speed in the UK is 20km/h (12.4mph), in line with the maximum speed limits in Germany, France and Denmark.
With the UK considering a maximum electric scooter speed limit of 25km/h (15.5mph) on roads, there’s no need for anything faster.
Three-speed driving modes
The Xiaomi Mi1S features three-speed driving modes – Pedestrian, Drive (standard) and Sports – and boasts a sophisticated cruise control system.
At 0-25km/h (0-15.5mph), Sports is the fastest mode which is perfect for commuting and getting you somewhere quicker. Drive (or standard) mode at 0-20km/h (0-12.4mph) is best for all-round use and cruising around the park.
And Pedestrian mode is a safer 0-5km/h (0-3.1mph) is ideal if you’re in heavy traffic or need to travel at a walking pace.
Motor power
The Xiaomi Mi 1S is powered by a front-wheel 250W (up to 500W maximum) motor, that’s ample enough power for commuting and everyday use. And there’s plenty enough ability to handle up to 14% gradient hills and carry a maximum load of 100kg.
With speed restrictions in place in most countries, you don’t need more power to go faster.
Range
The Xiaomi Mi 1S range is up to 30km (18.6 miles). However, the actual distance varies and depends on several factors, including the load weight, scooter speed, road conditions, wind speed, and temperature.
Battery
A high safety lithium battery with a significant power supply offers safe and durable performance. And longer battery life is enabled by a new energy recovery system that converts kinetic energy into electrical energy.
Furthermore, the battery management system has six innovative protections to keep the battery safe and extend its life. The Mi Home app monitors the battery continuously and flags up any problems immediately.
Safety
Rider safety is a crucial component built into the design of the Xiaomi 1S. The wheels and tyres, dual-braking system, lights and reflectors, driving control and display combine for a safer riding experience.
Wheels and tyres
Xiaomi’s shock absorbent and skid-resistant 8.5-inch (21.6cm) tyres produce a comfortable and smoother ride over roads and non-paved roads such as gravel, dirt and grass. These tyres make the 1S scooter easier to control and handle, whatever the surface.
With puncture resistance and durability increased three-fold, the new and improved tyres make a safe ride.
Dual-braking system
A dual-braking system with a front E-ABS (electronic anti-lock braking system) and a rear disc brake combine for a shorter and safer braking distance. The front and rear brakes activate after one another to ensure safe stopping.
Lights and reflectors
The ultra-bright 2W front headlight on the Xiaomi 1S enhances your view and makes you more visible at night. The angle of the light has also been improved to avoid headlight dazzle.
At the rear, the red backlight automatically comes on with the headlight. When you brake, the rear light blinks as a warning to other vehicles and pedestrians.
For extra safety, reflectors at the front, sides and backlight enhance night visibility.
Together, the improved lights and new reflectors make driving safer at night and in the day.
Ease of use riding and transporting
Like previous Xiaomi’s, ease of use and transporting your scooter is paramount to the overall experience. Intuitive controls and a multi-functional LED display, the design and build, straightforward portability and the Xiaomi app makes the Mi 1S a joy to operate.
Controls
On the right-side handlebar, the thumb-controlled throttle provides smooth acceleration. And the moderate resistance with timely feedback makes it easy to control the driving speed.
The left-side handlebar has a bike-like lever that activates the rear brake and a thumb-controlled bell.
A comfortable grip made from rubber and plastic ensures your hands are safe on the handlebars on both sides.
Multi-functional dashboard
A multi-functional LED display dashboard allows you to view and control a range of settings. You can select one of the three driving modes from the dashboard – Pedestrian, Drive (standard) and Speed. It also provides speed, distance, battery level, lock status and more.
Design and build
The Xiaomi Mi 1S has a simple and sleek design made from aerospace-grade aluminium alloy. For the launch, it’s available in stylish black and dark grey with yellow trim from the reflectors.
It’s a robust and sturdy build and able to handle a 100kg load weight.
Transporting and portability
Light, durable and weighing just 12.5kg, the Mi 1S is easy to transport and move around. The low weight makes commuting more straightforward if you’re carrying your scooter on and off trains or navigating stairs.
It only takes three seconds to fold and unfold the scooter. And with folded dimensions of 490mm (h) x 430mm (w) x 1080 (l), it’s easy to store and pack into the boot of your car.
What’s New?: Xiaomi Mi 1S v M365 Comparison
The Xiaomi Mi 1S has a series of updates compared to the M365, including an additional riding mode, an improved multi-functional LED display, enhanced safety features, a better rear mudguard (fender), and some cosmetic changes.
There’re enough changes to call it an update, but some fans wanting more may be disappointed. If you’ve already got a world-beating e-scooter and need to satisfy new European legislation, Xiaomi has decided not to reinvent the wheel.
There are no price increases, so you’ll get more value with no extra cost.

The all-around reflectors and number plate holder have been introduced to satisfy new laws in Germany. Recently, e-scooters are officially able to use the roads, and both of these features are required.
