Xiaomi Mi Essential Electric Scooter Review

The Xiaomi Mi Essential is a new electric scooter aimed at first-time and budget-conscious users. With more basic specifications and a lower price, it can’t be compared to existing models (for a comparison of the new and old, see Xiaomi Mi 1S v M365 and Xiaomi Mi Pro 2 v M365 Pro).

Power and speed

The Xiaomi Essential achieves a maximum speed of 12.4mph (20km/h) which is powered by a 250 watts motor. It has two-speed settings – normal and eco – and sophisticated cruise control.

It’s suitable to handle gradients of 10% will be enough for slopes and small hills.

There’s enough power for most standard users needs, but if you’re looking for something with more oomph, you’re better off looking at Xiaomi’s other new scooters.

Maximum range and battery

The Mi Essential has a typical range of 9 miles (14 km) or around 40 minutes ride time, which is optimised by its smart battery management system and kinetic storage. It’s quick to charge at 3.5 hours, so ideal for commuters who can charge at work.

Design and build

Made from aerospace-grade aluminium alloy, the Mi Essential has a typical Xiaomi-style minimal design. It’s only available in black for launch with yellow trim on the front wheel and reflectors at the back.

A sturdy build with a reasonable weight of 12kg means it’s easy to get around and transport. Like all Xiaomi models, it’s quick to fold and unfold in a few seconds.

The handlebar is not adjustable at a fixed height. After unboxing, it’s easy to assemble the handlebar onto the rest of the scooter with four screws.

Wheels and tyres

The Mi Essential’s 8.5-inch (21.6 cm) wheels are standard size, and Xiaomi has resisted the temptation to follow the trend for bigger wheels. Shock absorbing and skid-resistant tyres make it a smooth ride and offer some protection against punctures.

Dual braking system

A dual braking system consists of a front automatic regenerative brake with E-ABS (anti-lock braking system). And on the rear, a disc manual brake system controlled by a lever on the left handlebar.

Lights and reflectors

On the front, there’s an ultra-bright light for extra safety at night. And at the rear, a red backlight which flashes as a warning to others when breaking.

For extra safety, at the front, rear and side there are reflectors. And also at the back, there’s a number plate holder.

Xiaomi app

Connect your Xiaomi Mi Essential to the Xiaomi app (Apple or Android) to get more detailed information about your scooters performance and mileage. Including speed, average speed, current riding distance and current battery level.

Verdict

The Mi Essential is an excellent entry-level choice and for people where lower speeds and distance suits their needs. Likely to come in cheaper than the M365 and despite it being new, you’d expect that for a lower specification model.

The difference in price between the Mi Essential and the existing M365 may tempt people to go for the latter while they’re still available. That said for a cheaper electric scooter, it’s a solid choice and backed up a by a winning brand.
